RALPH HUFFMAN is beginning
his tenth year at Fort Hays and last
year had his most successful season
with seven wins, two losses and a
share o f the Central Conference title.
“Red” was a member of the 1936
championship Tiger squad where he
was all-conference and all-state cen-
ter.

PAUL GROSS served as head bas-
ketball coach at Fort Hays for 17
years before becoming athletic direc-
tor in the fall of 1946. In college he
was a star in both football and bas-
ketball, playing on the Ft. Hays
championship football teams of 1917,
1920, and 1921. His Tiger basketball
teams tied for the Central Conference
title twice and held many seconds.

ALEX FRANCIS, head track coach,
is another Fort Hays graduate who
came back home. In football he
coaches the backfield. Track teams
coached by Alex won the 1946 and
1952 CIC titles and in 1948 were co-
champions. They have never finished
below second in conference competi-
tion. Alex came here in 1946.

CADE SURAN aids Huffman dur-
ing the football season by coaching
the ends and scouting other teams.
Cade began college at Emporia State,
but transferred to Kansas Wesleyan
after one semester where he was a
star forward. In his sophomore and
junior years he held the Kansas con-
ference scoring honors. Besides bas-
ketball, Cade Is tennis and golf coach.

Tonight’s Game

Tonight will mark the 28th time the Southwest-
ern Moundbuilders and Foil Hays Tigers have tang-
led since the two first began the exchange back in
1917. The Tigers have won 17 games and the
Moundbuilders seven. Three other contests ended
in ties. Southwestern has not defeated Fort Hays
since 1946 although in 1950 and 1952 the game ended
in ties. Fort Hays holds the longest winning streak
beginning in 1932 and continuing for eight years.
Both teams go into play tonight with two wins and
one loss this season. Southwestern opened the sea-
son at home against Northeast Missouri of Kirks-
ville. The Moundbuilders lost 7-6. (The Kirksville
squad this last weekend dropped Pittsburg State
20-13.) In their second game at Baldwin the Build-
ers walked over Baker university 25-0. Last Satur-
day afternoon they returned to Winfield and de-
feated Missouri Central of Warrensburg 28-0. Fort
Hays lost its opener to a strong Central Oklahoma
squad at Edmond 19-12 and then came home to down
Southwest Missouri 19-7. Last weekend at Mary-
ville the Tigers defeated Northwest Missouri 27-13.
(It is interesting to note that Southwest Missouri
defeated Emporia State 27-26 last weekend.) To-
night the Moundbuilders will be out to avenge a
14-7 defeat they suffered at the hands of Fort Hays
.last year at Winfield.
